ALERT: THE NUCLEAR THREAT

As soon as Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, 2022, President Putin ordered his country's nuclear weapons to be put on alert. He subsequently indicated that Russia would use nuclear weapons if its vital interests were threatened. On August 1, 2025, President Trump ordered the deployment of 2 nuclear submarines near Russia. Recall that Russia and the United States are the largest holders of nuclear warheads: 5,977 for Russia and 5,224 for the United States. In addition, these two countries have aircraft and submarines that launch nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons have only been used twice by the United States on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima, and August 9 in Nagasaki. Hiroshima was massively destroyed, resulting in the deaths of 140,000 people, not counting the thousands of residents who were irradiated and subsequently died. As for Nagasaki, 6 km2 of the city was devastated, leading to the death of 74,000 people and thousands of residents being irradiated.During the Cold War between the United States and the USSR, nuclear weapons were never used, considered as weapons of deterrence. On the contrary, several Treaties have been signed by the two countries for the reduction of these weapons. In the meantime, several countries have acquired nuclear weapons: China, France, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan. Israel, and North Korea. Iran also wanted to acquire nuclear weapons, but it was attacked on June 13, 2025 by Israel, and on June 21 by the United States. This allowed the total or partial destruction of its nuclear arsenal. In 1968 the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was signed, and came into force in 1970. But several countries did not adhere to this Treaty, including India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea.We can only be concerned about the current situation, following the statements of President Putin and President Trump. Experts have calculated that the stored nuclear power would destroy planet Earth several times over. We must hope for reason and avoid at all costs a third world war which would bring about the end of humanity. We are all concerned, even countries that do not possess nuclear weapons. After the end of the war in Ukraine, which I hope is very close, we should convene a Major International Conference within the UN, for the general disarmament of nuclear weapons, or in any case its drastic reduction. And the firm ban on any other country from acquiring nuclear weapons
